Ammunition

Normal Ammunition
Normal Ammunition will replenish the ammunition of any Tier 1 or Tier 2 weapon. It will not, however, replenish the ammunition inside a Magazine currently loaded. To fill your weapon completely, reload and then gather ammunition from a Normal Ammunition pile.
Note: Normal Ammunition piles do not refill the ammunition of Special Tier weapons such as the Grenade Launcher or Chainsaw.

Incendiary Ammunition
Incendiary Ammunition lights all normal and special infected on fire. It replaces the ammunition in your primary weapon until the Magazine is depleted. As such, it makes sense to allow the player with the largest Magazine to take this ammo type.
Note: Tanks are only lit for 5 seconds when hit with Incendiary Ammunition.

Explosive Ammunition
Explosive Ammunition causes an explosion upon impact, instantly killing common infected and dealing massive damage to special infected. It creates a small shockwave that will knock down common infected within the radius and cause special infected players to stumble. It replaces the ammunition in your primary weapon until the Magazine is depleted. When loaded into a shotgun, the weapon will fire high-damage slugs instead of pellets.
Note: Explosive Ammunition does not do any more damage than normal ammunition to a tank.

Laser Sight
The laser sight increases the accuracy of any Tier 1 or Tier 2 weapon.
Note: Laser sight upgrades cannot be transfered. Picking up a new weapon, even the same weapon as the gun on which the laser sight is applied, will disengage the upgrade. Picking up the gun you just dropped will re-engage it.
Melee Weapons
All melee weapons do 400 damage a hit. They instantly kill normal infected and most special infected. It takes 10 melee hits to bring down a tank and 2 for a charger. The melee weapons differ in their effective range, arc, and swing speed. The only firm number I can provide is the swing speed in seconds. Lower numbers are better, since the weapon swings faster. As a caveat, player consensus seems to be that the katana and axe have the widest arc and killing range.

Baseball Bat
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.84

Crowbar
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.92

Electric Guitar
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.92

Fire Axe
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.92

Frying Pan
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.89

Machete
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.67

Cricket Bat
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.84

Tonfa (Nightstick)
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.65

Katana
Swing Speed (Seconds): 0.78

Chainsaw
Damage Per Hit: 100
Rate of Fire: 600/minute (10/second)
Damage Per Second: 1000
Seconds of Usage: 60
Total Damage Possible: 60,000

Good guide. It would be nice if ‘clips’ could be replaced with ‘magazines’. For example, the SMGs don’t have clips, they are loaded with magazines.
Might want to note some of the guns special abilities that makes them “better” such as the SCARS Tri-burst shooting, and the Magnums (current) no incap accuracy penalty.
Even so nice guide. I usually want to have a gun that’s accurate so this helps. Thanks man.
Hey, I believe there’s a few bugs but otherwise awesome.
The AK47 fires once every 0.13 seconds (RPM = 461)
The M16 fires once every 0.0875 seconds (RPM = 685)
The SCAR fires once every 0.07 seconds but there is a delay. I cannot say what it’s rate of fire is but I know that the numbers you listed for Assault Rifles are based off their real counterparts not in-game.
The Hunting Rifle also cycles at the same rate as the Sniper Rifle, so it should read ’240 RPM’ not ’225.’
Cheers, hope this helps, the rest seems right :)
None of the weapons listed are Clip fed. They are all magazine fed.
AWESOME! I was going nuts trying to figure out the differences between these weapons… geeze, some of them are so minute… they’re basically the same weapons.
But please man… Change “clip” to “magazine”.
lol fine, Clip is now Magazine. I hope you’re happypants.
:p

No grenade launcher? No 30 Cal?
happypants?
Thanks Brian! This is awesome. I love how everyone on here is so concerned with political correctness of firearm terminology. To be honest I’ve always felt offended by the terms magazine AND clip. I would appreciate if you called them ” Automatically fed detachable ammunition holders”. Thanks :)
I think that the grenade launcher is called the “Thumper”.
The magnum pistol is also a Desert Eagle, it is made by Magnum Research — other than that, great job
You’re missing the Glock automatic pistol from the list. Even though it’s statistically the same as the SIG P220, it is a different weapon model. Just thought I’d mention that for the sake of having a complete list.
Also, to the 1337-5m4rt455 known as st0rmcrovv, the “political correctness” of firearms terminology has to do with the fact that one term is blatantly wrong. A clip is not the same thing as a magazine…at all. But, hey, why not just call a car an airplane?
sir, you are awesome.
win
The Tactical Shotgun (Auto) i believe is called the M1014, if my Call of Duty 4 info is correct LOL.
I want to quote your post in my blog. It can?
And you et an account on Twitter?
@runews
Yes, you may post this wherever you would like, as long as you give attribution and a link to this post as the source.
Thank you for a good story, I really enjoyed your blog. Be sure to give a link to your friends!
Just a little more correction, the “Military Sniper” is known as the H&K PSG-1, just thought I’d give my weapons expertness in, lols. Thankies.
Also, the normal Tier 1 Shotgun is most likely a first generation Remington 870, and I may be wrong. I know for a fact it is a Remington though. The Tier 1 Auto is also an FN TPS (Tactical Police Shotgun). ^_^
@SilentWolf:
The Sniper is not a PSG-1, it’s an HK-41 or G3. This is because the game’s model has a frontal sight, the PSG-1 is never produced with a frontal sight. HK-41 and G3 however, do have frontal sights.
The Automatic Shotgun is also not the FN TPS. It’s the Benelli M1014 (also known as M4 Super 90.) It even says so in the weapon script.
The .50 M2HB stats are not within any script but are in changeable within the console. It fires 8 rounds per second, overheats after 15 seconds of continous fire, takes 60 seconds to cool down, and deals 50 damage per shot.
The Grenade Launcher stats are also viewable/configurable within the console, but I don’t know them.
clips and magazines are the same thing dumbass
Sono molto grato a voi per informazioni. E ‘molto utile.
Ahhh, wasn’t paying attention to that good point noname, lols. Plus, the clip structure is also different along with the present frontal sight. I looked more carefully and I believe the model is actually that of the G3. Sorry for the mistake, I’ve been quite busy rebuilding an antique Winchester Model 1887. ^___^
Pienso que no sois derecho. Escriban en PM, discutiremos.
Many thanks for taking the time to put this together man! I tip my hat to you.
One minor correction: Incendiary ammo is made available to all 4 survivors when deployed, so you don’t need to worry about giving the player with the largest magazine priority, as suggested.
It would be nice to also include the reloading times of the different weapons. I wonder which of the Tier 2 shotguns reloads faster? Also, if there’s a difference between the melee weapons (like swing speed or range) – I’m still debating which one is better – a Katana or an Axe?? I love this guide – have it bookmarked :)
Great idea – I’ve updated the post with those numbers.
“clips and magazines are the same thing dumbass”

The above comment is only true if you are a moron and know absolutely nothing about firearms. (90% of all the “experts” on the internet are pimple faced 15 year old boys.)
Great list dude, I couldn’t figure out what weapons would be better to use. But, and this is just a suggestion, if you would change “clip” to “magazine” it would be a perfect list. :)
One thing I’ve never seen mentioned in these Weapons Guides is the difference between the Hunting Rifle and the Sniper Rifle – i.e. the Hunting Rifle’s Crosshair is tighter and does seem to be more accurate when moving.
there are a few weapons missing, M60,golf club, minigun.
Yeah, a few weapons are missing, any chance of adding them? e.g golf club
u guys ah , this is the most powerful weapon in left 4 dead 2
